Severe Traffic Congestion Hits Lenteng Agung Due to Road Repairs

A major sinkhole has caused severe traffic congestion on Lenteng Agung Road heading toward Depok on Friday morning (May 30). The road collapse, which measures approximately 3 meters deep and 4 meters long, has forced the closure of a significant portion of the thoroughfare just past Gang Empang, South Jakarta.

Observations by kumparan starting at 9:01 AM WIB revealed that traffic flow was already heavily restricted before the Lenteng Agung Flyover. Vehicles were seen crawling at a snail’s pace along the one-way route leading toward Depok.

The traffic gridlock extended significantly, reaching as far back as the Sentra Fauna Lenteng Agung area, with heavy congestion persisting up to the GKOI Maranatha point. The commute covering a distance of less than 2 kilometers—from before the flyover to GKOI Maranatha—took nearly 30 minutes, with the kumparan team reaching the GKOI Maranatha area only by 9:30 AM WIB.

Prior to the full collapse, officials had attempted to repair a noticeable depression in the road surface on Thursday afternoon (May 28). Unfortunately, the road completely gave way later that night, causing the thoroughfare to narrow significantly.

Local residents reported that the collapse occurred around 10:30 PM WIB. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties. “There were no victims,” confirmed Imam, a local resident.

According to Imam, the area had shown warning signs of structural failure, with cracks appearing as early as three days prior. “These cracks had been there since yesterday, but they were just patched over,” he noted.

Imam had monitored the road’s condition throughout the afternoon, observing that the ground appeared to stabilize temporarily. “By the afternoon, I saw that it wasn’t shifting much anymore, but in the end, it still collapsed tonight,” he added.

Summary

A significant sinkhole measuring 3 meters deep and 4 meters long has caused severe traffic congestion on Lenteng Agung Road heading toward Depok. The collapse, which occurred on the night of May 28 following earlier attempts to patch structural cracks, has forced the closure of a large portion of the road. Commuters have faced heavy gridlock, with travel times significantly increased due to the restricted traffic flow.

Local residents reported that no casualties resulted from the road failure, which followed days of visible surface cracking. Despite initial repair efforts, the thoroughfare gave way completely, leading to ongoing traffic delays that extended back to the Sentra Fauna area. Authorities are currently managing the impact of the obstruction as commuters navigate the affected route.
