JAKARTA. Every investor’s journey is defined by unique life experiences and the distinct opportunities they encounter along the way. For Sunyoto Bambang Kusumo, Director of PT MPX Logistics International Tbk (MPXL), these opportunities have shaped him into an investor capable of navigating the volatility of today’s domestic stock market with confidence and precision.
Sunyoto’s foundation in finance began during his management studies at the University of Surabaya. However, his true fascination with the stock market was ignited by the Astra Shares Ownership program, which granted employees company equity. This sparked his curiosity: What exactly are stocks, and how can one generate wealth from owning them? By 1997, he was already learning the mechanics of trading, including lot systems and the nuances of buying and selling shares.
The Turning Point: Lessons from 2008
“I realized that the market acts as a bridge between buyers and sellers, allowing stocks to be converted into cash at market prices. That realization is what drew me in,” he recalls. After entering the Indonesian market in 2004, Sunyoto initially enjoyed easy wins. However, the 2008 financial crisis proved to be a harsh teacher; his portfolio plummeted, losing 95% of its value. Back then, educational resources were scarce, making that painful experience a defining moment in his investment career.
Seeking to master market mechanisms, he traveled to Singapore in 2012 for professional training, mentorship, and membership-based education. The results were tangible: within a year, he began consistently achieving returns of 20%–30%, comfortably outpacing inflation. He eventually integrated a trading system into his strategy, utilizing technical analysis and backtesting to identify high-potential opportunities.
Evolution Through Technology and Global Markets
By 2021, Sunyoto had expanded his horizons to the United States stock market, and by 2022, he began exploring derivatives such as forex, commodities—including gold, oil, meat, and coffee—and cryptocurrencies. While he once spent his evenings manually analyzing over 150 stocks, he now leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline his workflow. Today, he only needs to dedicate a short window in the morning to select three to five candidates for trading near the close of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), and adjust his schedule for the US markets during the late-night hours.
Comparing his past losses, Sunyoto notes that while his US market setbacks—such as a $45,000 loss—were significant, they were educational. “In 2008, I felt robbed because I didn’t understand why I was losing. Now, even when I lose, I understand the ‘why’ behind the trade,” he explains.
Strategic Portfolio Management
Currently, Sunyoto’s portfolio is fully allocated between Indonesian and US stocks. He maintains long-term holdings in banking giants like PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BBRI) and PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA), alongside NVIDIA and the S&P 500. His remaining capital is deployed through a Quant Trading system. For now, he has paused crypto and forex trading to focus on global markets, reporting a 126% return on his base trading capital this year despite global geopolitical instability.
Reflecting on his transition from an employee to an independent investor, Sunyoto emphasizes that the goal was always financial freedom for his retirement. He stresses a vital distinction between investing and trading: true investment must have an underlying asset, such as a company with proven profit growth and operational efficiency. “I am not anti-crypto as a trader, but it lacks the underlying value required for long-term investment,” he cautions.
Ultimately, Sunyoto encourages fellow investors to look beyond social media hype and prioritize facts. Whether using manual analysis or sophisticated AI-driven systems, he believes the key to success lies in deep understanding. “Get to know your investments and understand how your money works,” he concludes, “rather than relying on unproven claims.”
